BSc in European Studies

The new Europe

Europe is facing a rapid development these days. Over the past twenty years, the map of Europe has changed. The main division constituted by the Cold War has disappeared. Although new conflicts have arisen and the formation of new nation-states has drawn new borders, today Europe is characterized by a comprehensive co-operation across the borders.

It takes place at many levels, from national to regional and local, including cross-border regional co-operation.

About the Programme

With the new study programme in European Studies, which focuses upon regional development, you will have the opportunity of analyzing and understanding the developments in Europe – including the regions of Europe.

Consequently, you will get qualifications to participate in the process of shaping Europe in the future through work in development projects run by private enterprises, government institutions, non-governmental organisations, and European institutions.

Campus Sønderborg is suitably placed in a historically disputed border region to provide students with an authentic European regional perspective on development as well as an international atmosphere.

BSc in European Studies: Content

Teaching
The Bachelor of Science in European Studies programme consists of 6 semesters – with app. 15 lessons per week. As a student you are the person being in charge of acquiring skills and knowledge. Teaching is offered, but attending lectures is not the primary activity for a student enrolled at the university. Skills and knowledge are not only developed in connection with teaching, but in a more important way through studies, field work/research, preparation of assignments, and especially through the interaction with fellow students.

Teaching is lectures, class instructions and individual supervision.

The bachelor's project
A bachelor programme ends with a bachelor's project during the sixth term. This offers you the opportunity – usually in collaboration with a business or an organization – to put into practice the knowledge you have acquired. The project therefore makes it possible for you to specialize in one of the subjects or one of the areas you have become particularly interested in during your studies.

BSc in European Studies: Career Opportunities

Further education
A bachelor degree gives access to further study on a master degree. It is possible to follow the master programmes in IT, communication and organisation, or IT product development. It is still to be determined which other master programmes the bachelor degree will give access to. The bachelor degree alone will also lead to employment.

Job and career
It is expected that the demand for well-qualified candidates with knowledge in European and regional issues will be increasing. Job opportunities for graduates in European Studies can be found within a widespread labour market which is in strong growth. We expect that there will be possibilities of employment in areas such as:

  • Public administration, for example development agencies in regions and municipalities;
  • Co-operation organisations between business organisations and public authorities regionally, nationally, and internationally;
  • Educational institutions, such as universities;
  • Private actors and companies, including consultancy companies and NGO's.

Graduates will be able to find employment in European and international institutions, for example with:

  • The European Union,
  • The European Council,
  • OECD and
  • OSCE.

It will also be possible to work with regional co-operation institutions dealing with European or transnational problems, for example:

  • The Council of the Baltic Sea States,
  • The Nordic Council,
  • The Central-European Initiative,
  • The Alpine-Adriatic co-operation or similar institutions.

Relevant job opportunities may also be found within more than 150 different institutionalised or formalised cross-border co-operations in Europe.
